Lamai Beach on Koh Samui is the second busiest on the island, behind, of course, Chaweng Beach.
The Beach stretches out over 4 kilometres of golden sand all along the east coast of the island.
Lamai beach itself is not as wide as Chaweng and it drops off quite quickly into the sea too. Consequently, it makes it a great place for swimming and other water sports. Please do be a little careful not to get out of your depth too quickly here.
At the southern end of the beach, there are the most intriguing rock formations. These rocks have been lovingly named ‘Grandmother and Grandfather Rock’ (locally known as Hin Yai & Hin Tai respectively).
Their familiar shapes and contours have amused people on the island since the beginning of time.
Lamai Beach
Being a much more relaxed place than Chaweng, Lamai, it still has its fair share of restaurants, bars, café’s, coffee shops and shopping. It is, of course, fantastic for young families and couples of all ages.
Lamai Beach is only a 10-minute drive from Chaweng Beach. So even if you stay in one resort or the other it is very easy to move around and see other beaches and nightlife.
There is a great range of hotels in Lamai too, catering to everyone.
From the backpacker, right up to the 5-star resort and spas to the luxury million dollar villas, so whatever your budget, it’s all doable.
A little further north than Lamai and towards the airport, you will find another beach resort going by the name of Bophut. This is an even quieter beach, those wishing for a relaxing time, away from the crowds come here.
Swaying palm trees fringed, Lamai Beach, all the way around this horseshoe-shaped beach. The gentle lapping waves at your feet and warm South Asian sun all around. It’s easy to get lost in your dreams while here.
At the northern end of the beach is quite rocky, making it an ideal area for a spot of snorkeling and swimming.
The fish life here is stunning too; beautiful parrotfish, colourful Wrasses, Clownfish, and Trumpetfish are just some of the reef fishes here.

Lamai Vendors
The central part of the beach is still the busiest area, with parasailing and jet ski rental available.
We must stress again, that be careful on these machines, as there may be no insurance amongst some of the traders.
You can also rent kayaks snorkeling gear wakeboarding and windsurfing. It is also possible to rent a speedboat here for the day or on an hourly basis, the choice is yours.
Even the vendors along this beach are chilled out, it’s a very friendly place indeed. You won’t have to move far once you are settled into your beach chair for the day.
Ice cold beer, ice cream, soft drink, and snacks can all be brought to you directly from the nearest little bar shack.
Fresh fruit, barbeque seafood’s, sweet corn som tam, souvenirs, presents for home such as pictures, handicrafts, small games and puzzles, and all the other stuff too, like t-shirts watches, sarongs flip-flops and jewelry to name a few and the like, so sit back and enjoy the show on Lamai Beach.
As the sun dips into the ocean, indicating the end of another day, the little bars start to put tables outside on the sand, most of the bars offer a happy hour.
