After wakening to the scented fragrances of the Koh Samui fauna, my family and I sat eating breakfast to the early morning chorus of the local fauna. Today we were even more excited than usual as we were going over to Koh Phangan for the day.
Koh Phangan is one of the most beautiful islands in the Gulf of Thailand and is part of Samui Archipelago. Phangan is very famous, rather more infamous fro one thing.
Any backpacker will tell you that the Full Moon Parties which are held every month on Haad Rin Beach are ‘rather wild’ with folk coming from all over the world to party.

Anyhow, back to our trip, the ferry took no more than 25 minutes from Koh Samui and to our delight, as we disembarked the ferry, our Mini Bus, Driver and Tour guide were waiting for us.
First stop, elephant trekking in the Than Sadet National Park. This national park is absolutely breath-taking and is one of the most peaceful spots I have ever seen.
Here we found some new friends, four friendly elephants, after our introductions we were off to the jungle and on our way up to the Phaeng Yai Waterfall.
As we make our way towards the waterfall our huge elephant stopped in his tracks, leaned back on a huge rock and vigorously scratched his large rear.
For what seemed an eternity but really only for two minutes, there was no moving him, until the itch had been satisfied we were going nowhere.
There is nothing quite like being sat on top of an elephant while he scratches his big butt.
Next stop was at a small animal rehab centre which is home to several monkeys, some squirrels, there is also a snake and a crocodile show with about ten freshwater crocodiles, all staring up at us.
Waterfalls and Lunches – Private Koh Phangan Tours
Once we arrived we were informed that at Phaeng Yai Waterfall, which is also part of Thansadej National Park, there are some other falls in the area called Phaeng Noi Waterfall and Thann Naam Rak waterfall.
Phaeng Yai Waterfall is encircled by a path which leads to the Dom Sila Viewpoint –here you can take some stunning photos.
Especially beautiful is the view of the forest to the top of Khao Ra, the highest mountain in Koh Pha Ngan.
We were getting hungry by this point and as lunchtime called us, we were taken to the Restaurant at Phangan Utopia Resort.
Oh, what a treat this place was, it has the most amazing sea views, the delightful refreshing light sea breeze as we relax a little at this hilltop paradise.
They serve everything from delicious traditional Thai cuisine to European specialties so even the children were content.
After indulging ourselves somewhat, it was time to resume this wonderful tour of the Pha Ngan Island.
As we descended the hill top view point and said good bye to the friendly staff at the restaurant, we found ourselves looking over what can only be described as a beach nirvana.
Beautiful Beaches – Easy Day Samui sightseeing
Malibu Beach (aka Ao Chalo) is absolutely exquisite. The pure white sand is so fine it simply slips through your toes and the surrounding waters are so tranquil like a blue lagoon.
Here if you are feeling fit and healthy you can even rent a Kayak and go and have a paddle around the coastline.
After Malibui beach we went through another beautiful albeit far busier beach called Mae Haat.
There are quite a few tourists here with many speedboats -which are used to speed tourists around the island- then we carried on our journey to onto the Chinese temple at Wat Pah Saeng Dhamma, which is a traditional Chinese Buddhist Shrine.
After the temple and a blessing by a monk, we traveled onto another temple named the Jade Buddha.
This is in the middle of the island on top of a high peak (475 metres) the Jade Buddha can be found in very close proximity to the entrance to Phaeng Waterfalls.
After we visited the waterfalls, it was starting to get a little late and time to catch the ferry back to Koh Samui.
First, we still had time to visit Thong Sala, which is a busy little town in the southern part of the island. Here you can find some wonderful little restaurants stop for a quick drink, or grab a souvenir from one of the little shops while waiting for the next ferry.
After a full day out, we all agreed it had been action packed and the memories will live with us for a long time to come.
Koh Phangan is truly a romantic paradise, not at all like the stories one comes across in some travel books.
We had a wonderful day there and were treated to a first class service from Easy Day Samui.
